Does DFCs help with housing in Georgia? ›

Division of Families: Georgia's Housing Policies Separate Parents From Children. While the state's Division of Family and Children Services provides little housing assistance, “inadequate housing” keeps parents from their kids.

In Georgia, landlords cannot kick tenants out of or prevent access to a unit without first going through the court dispossessory (eviction) process. Self-help evictions are illegal, even if the tenant has violated the lease.

Unfortunately Georgia does not have a law limiting the amount of the security deposit, nor whether the landlord may demand first and last month rent.

Leases are legally binding contracts, so when you're 18, you have the right to sign a rental agreement and get your own space.

Determine if You're Eligible

Meet income limits specified by HUD (less than 50% of the median income for the county in which you live). Be a citizen or eligible immigrant. Be 18 years of age or older. Be a resident of the state of Georgia.

The Emergency Housing Voucher (EHV) program is available through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Through EHV, HUD awarded the Georgia Department of Community Affairs a total of 798 vouchers.

It is a tenant-based program which assists low income families rent safe, decent, and affordable housing in the private market by offering assistance payments directly to the owner on behalf of the family. The subsidy remains with the family; it is not attached to the dwelling unit.
